Oma

On June 11, 2011 my Oma (Grandmother) passed away from her battle with cancer that she had been battling for a short 18 months. I wrote this poem the day after she passed away, to celebrate her memory. It was read at her funeral by my sister, to which I am eternally grateful for. I am not an overly religious person, but cannot fathom disbelief in a better life when we are gone. I take comfort in believing in Heaven and that my Oma is up there with Him. I still miss her everyday.

A life that was lived to the fullest
One of happiness, family and joy,
A life that was full of faith and giving,
A life all should try to employ.

She lived a life to celebrate
Coming through the hard
She survived this world’s harshest test
Her family she did guard.

She came here to live her life
In comfort and with pride
Soon enough she fell in love
And then became a bride.

Within a year their family grew
Into a family of three
Eventually having a total four
To add to the family tree.

Her children got married
And she approved of each mate
As her family grew bigger
Not just four kids, but eight.

Her grandchildren came
She couldn’t be more proud
A large family she loved
We had a place on her cloud.

Oma was one of the special people
Who treated everyone right
Always there for loving support
Lifting spirits as high as kites.

She always watched with loving eyes
Her husband, kids, and grand,
Picking up when we were down
Extending a friendly hand.

So let’s raise a hand as if to toast
And let the sadness pass
God needed a special angel
Her soul is home at last.
